The Fruit Basket
About Us
Our Space To Be Every Colour, Proudly
The Fruit Basket is a registered non-profit organisation that advocates for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+) refugees, asylum seekers and forced migrants living in South Africa.
The organisation is guided by four primary objectives:
1. To provide support and relief to LGBTQI+ refugees, asylum seekers and forced migrants.
2. To increase awareness of the challenges facing LGBTQI+ refugees, asylum seekers and forced migrants and to advocate for their right to live freely, safely and with dignity.
3. To promote equitable access to services and socio-economic opportunities for LGBTQI+ refugees, asylum seekers and forced migrants.
4. To build solidarity between the LGBTQI+ community, the refugee community and social justice movements, both locally and internationally.
To achieve these objectives, the organisation undertakes work in the following areas:
• Activism and sensitisation around the needs of trans and gender-diverse refugees, asylum seekers and forced migrants.
• Developing LGBTQI+ leadership and entrepreneurial skills through livelihood programmes.
• Grassroots-level research on the experiences and needs of the LGBTQI+ refugees, asylum seekers and forced migrants.
• Documenting and publicising the narratives of LGBTQI+ refugees, asylum seekers and forced migrants.
• Engaging with government departments, humanitarian agencies and civil society partners.
• Circulating accurate information about legal rights, including the documentation and asylum processes.
